Comments: |
This seed is collected from the Northern range of the species. We find that once you dry the fresh seed it must be cold moist stratified to achieve best germination. Seed count ranges 32,000-35,000 per lb. pending on crop year. Soak seed in water 24 hours prior to sowing or stratifying. A short cold stratification (up to 30 days)will increase speed, uniformity and germination % of seed. Spring Crop. Only Northern collected seed should be grown up North. If you sow Southern range seed up North the seedlings will suffer from frost/freeze damage and die-back. Northern source seed can be grown down South for re-sale up North. Do not over-dry seed. Stored seed may be cold stratified to increase the speed and uniformity of germination. Winged seed is as collected from the tree, wings intact and de-winged seed has the wings removed with an upgrading to a cleaner purity. Flowers colors of yellow or red in the Spring shows us the Fall foliage color . Red flowers are usually red leaved Fall colors and Yellow flowers are usually Yellow leaved Fall colors. |
Germination info: |
Fresh seed (not dried) does not require a pre-treatment. Fresh seed which has been dried DOES REQUIRE a pre-treatment of up to 30 days cold stratification. We collect then dry the seed so we recommend you cold stratify the seed prior to Spring sowing. Germination rates will improve greatly if you stratify the seed. Stored seed also requires a pre-treatment. We recommend 30 days cold moist stratification. In storage the seed seems to develop a hard seed coat or a secondary dormancy and the recommended pre-treatment will increase speed and uniformity as well as % of germination. |
