The warm stratification is to break down the hard seed coat which not only stops water from getting to the seed embryo but also will stop the root or leaves of a germinating seed from getting to the outside world past the seed coat. Seed can germinate and not be able to force open the two halves of the outside shell causing the seed to use up its reserves and die before it can reach the soil and sun. You can hot water treat the seed and then while holding the seed wing, force the two halves slightly apart in the rounded part of a pair of pliers. The line of separation on the shell should be vertical. Slightly compress the pliers only so that you do not crush the seed as well. After the "cracking" of the seed, soak in water for 24 hours then go right into cold stratification, skipping the warm stratification. Perhaps some type of mechanical scarification or acid scarification would work for the larger wholesale seedling grower. |

Seed requires a hot water treatment then 5 months warm stratification followed by 90 days cold stratification |
